Official: Russia working on accumulated environment damage bill

MOSCOW, Feb 25 (PRIME) -- Russia's Natural Resources and Environment Ministry is working on a bill to liquidate accumulated damage to the environment, Roman Maltsev, department director, said on Thursday.

"The key issue is that there is no system when owners of hazardous industrial facilities liquidate the damage on their own and do not drop the facilities while they are still alive," Maltsev said. "If you are to build a plant, think beforehand how you will dismantle it and what kind of waste you will have to dispose of."

He said that there are about 1,000 abandoned hazardous facilities in Russia accumulated during dozens of years.
